In late year 2005 the Icelandic State Trading Centre (Ríkiskaup) accepted Myflug’s bid to provide air ambulance services to most of the country.
The ensuing contract is the first of it’s kind in Iceland. Myflug provides a pressurized turboprop aircraft with specialized medevac equipment and crew to be ready at a moments notice around
the clock every day of the year. The contract period is from 2006-2011 with an option to extend until 2013.

The specialized medevac equipment is provided by the ministry of health and is specially made for the aircraft. Akureyri Fire Department and local hospital provide doctors and
paramedics trained and highly experienced in air ambulance operations to accompany the aircraft on it’s missions.
Myflug opted to use a Beachcraft Kingair B200 aircraft and acquired it’s current aircraft in April of 2006 after using aircraft from two different operators on a lease basis for the first
months of the contract period. As a matter of fact Myflug’s airplane had been in operation on a lease basis for 2 months when an agreement to purchase it was made. During this time Myflug
evaluated aircraft, trained it’s pilots and launched a significant restructuring of the company’s flight operations. Myflug registered the aircraft on it’s Air Operators Certificate
as TF-MYX in May 2006.
In November of 2006 the specialized medevac equipment was installed during a maintenance visit in Denmark, thereby completing the most important steps in setting up the operation.

The start up, although not without effort, has been according to plan. Although Myflug has over two decades of experience in ambulance flying the operation is not solely drawn on experience as this type of operation is the first of its kind in Iceland. Much has been learned that hopefully will contribute to future operations of ambulance flying in Iceland. Aircraft and Crew have proven themselves time and again during the first year of operation and response time has been significantly shorter than required by contract.

In June 2008 a new hangar was inaugurated at Akureyri airport which houses the air ambulance operation, complete with flight operations, classroom and offices. This structure will be a valuable addition to the framework of ambulance service in Iceland. Many other projects are under consideration with the company in hope of always providing a safer and more efficient operation for all involved.
