Our newest tour, which covers the latest volcanic eruption area in Iceland!
The volcanic eruption that started on May 21st 2011 in Grímsvötn is a short flight away from Mývatn and Akureyri. The area is one of the most active in Iceland, with 13 eruptions having occurred since 1902, the latest before this one was in 2004.
Departure is from our airfield by Lake Mývatn to the South, towards Vatnajökull-glacier, the largest glacier in Europe. The area surrounding the volcano is now covered with volcanic ash and with a steam rising up from the eruption area, providing an interesting contrast when flying above the otherwise white glacier.
On the way back you will fly over Askja, which is also an active volcano (but dormant at the moment), past Mt. Herdubreid and up to Krafla before landing again at Lake Mývatn.
This is an unique opportunity to see one of the most powerful force Mother Nature has to offer! You will get the best possible view of the area by flying overhead. (Although the volcanic activity appears to be mostly over, the traces of this powerful, but short eruption will be clearly visible throughout the summer).
